How to Sell Digital Products Internationally from Pakistan

A Pakistani creator can sell templates, ebooks, courses, design assets, code, memberships and other digital products to international buyers. The hard part is not uploading a file. It is choosing a lawful payment route, controlling fees and refunds, delivering reliably, and keeping records that your bank and tax adviser can understand.

This guide uses a decision-first approach. Platform and payment availability changes, so confirm onboarding and payout support on the provider’s official website before building your business around it.

Choose the business model before the platform

Model
Best for
Main trade-off
Merchant of record
Creators who want the platform to handle sales tax/VAT obligations at checkout
Higher fees and platform dependency
Marketplace
Discovery and simple setup
Less control and marketplace competition
Own store
Brand, SEO and customer ownership
You manage more compliance and integrations
Direct invoices or payment links
B2B products and custom licences
Less automated for low-price consumer sales

Step 1: define a narrow product and buyer

Start with one expensive problem for one identifiable buyer. “Notion client portal for Pakistani agencies” is more testable than “productivity template.” Interview prospective buyers, publish a preview and collect a waitlist before producing a large library. Validate willingness to pay, not only likes.

Step 2: choose a selling stack available to you

Compare Gumroad, Payhip and other creator platforms; merchant-of-record providers such as Lemon Squeezy or Paddle; marketplaces relevant to the asset type; and a WordPress or Shopify store. Do not assume that a platform accepting Pakistani customers also onboards Pakistani sellers. Check seller-country eligibility, identity requirements, payout method, reserve rules, prohibited products and dispute handling.

If a platform requires Stripe, verify whether you can open an account directly from your actual country and entity. Do not use borrowed identities or misleading overseas addresses. A provider can freeze funds when identity, ownership or operating location does not match.

Step 3: model the full cost

Calculate platform fee, payment-processing fee, currency conversion, payout fee, refund and chargeback exposure, withholding and applicable tax. A 10 USD product can become uneconomic after acquisition and support costs. Price in the currency your buyer understands, then keep a PKR management view for your records.

Step 4: prepare lawful payment and banking records

Use an account suited to freelance or business receipts and keep invoices, platform statements, payout confirmations, contracts and remittance evidence. Your bank may issue a proceeds-realisation certificate or electronic PRC for incoming foreign currency. See the upcoming e-PRC guide for freelancers and the existing international payments guide.

Practical note: Tax treatment depends on your facts, registration, product, customer and payment flow. Use current FBR and State Bank guidance and consult a qualified Pakistani tax professional. This article is general information, not tax or legal advice.

Step 5: build the minimum trustworthy sales page

  • A specific promise and intended buyer.
  • Original screenshots, sample pages or a working demo.
  • Exactly what the buyer receives and in which formats.
  • Licence terms, update period and usage restrictions.
  • Refund policy and support channel.
  • Creator identity, contact information and privacy terms.
  • A fast, mobile-friendly checkout with no surprise fees.

Step 6: secure delivery

Use expiring download links, account-based access or a reputable delivery provider. Keep clean master files, malware-scan uploads, version products and provide a changelog. Do not add heavy digital-rights controls that punish legitimate buyers without materially stopping piracy.

Step 7: handle international tax at checkout

Digital product sales can trigger VAT, GST or sales-tax obligations based on the buyer’s location. A merchant of record may calculate, collect and remit these taxes as the seller of record, while a payment processor generally does not automatically assume that legal role. Read the contract and confirm which party appears on the customer receipt.

Step 8: launch through proof, not volume

  1. Publish a useful free sample that demonstrates the product method.
  2. Recruit a small beta group and document their outcomes with permission.
  3. Create comparison and use-case pages for search intent.
  4. Build an email sequence that teaches before it sells.
  5. Collect support questions and turn them into product improvements and content.

Common mistakes in Pakistan

  • Building around a payment route that is not officially supported.
  • Using an overseas identity or address that cannot pass compliance checks.
  • Mixing personal and business records.
  • Ignoring refunds, customer support and sales-tax responsibility.
  • Selling generic AI-generated bundles with no unique method or licence clarity.
  • Depending entirely on one platform or social account.

A safer starter setup

For a first product, choose a platform that officially onboards your real Pakistan-based setup, supports a workable payout method and clearly allocates tax responsibility. Launch one product, run real transactions, download every statement and confirm what documentation your bank provides before scaling ads or affiliates.
