If you searched for how to submit your site to Google News, you have probably found older guides telling you to apply through Publisher Center and wait for approval.
That is out of date. Google changed how this works, and the good news is that it is now much simpler.
You No Longer Apply to Google News
Google used to run a manual review process. You submitted your site, waited weeks, and hoped.
That is gone. Google now finds news content automatically, the same way it finds everything else. If you publish news and your site meets their content policies, you are already eligible to appear. There is no form to fill in and no queue to join.
So the question changed. It is no longer “how do I get in”. It is “how do I make my site the kind of site Google shows”.
What Publisher Center Is Actually For Now
Google Publisher Center still exists, and it is still worth setting up. It just does something different from what people expect.
You use it to manage how your publication looks and behaves: your name, your logo, your sections, and access if you run a subscription. It is a presentation and management tool, not an application form. Setting it up does not get you into Google News, and skipping it does not keep you out.
What Actually Gets You Shown
Publish real news
This sounds obvious but it is where most sites fail. Google News is for timely reporting on events. Evergreen how-to guides, reviews and opinion pieces are not news, however good they are.
Show who wrote it
Real bylines, with real author pages explaining who that person is and why they are worth reading. Anonymous content struggles badly here.
Make your dates clear
News is time-sensitive, so publication dates need to be obvious and accurate. Do not fake-refresh old articles with new dates, which is a good way to lose trust entirely.
Be a real, contactable organisation
A proper About page, a way to contact you, and clear ownership information. Google leans heavily on signals that you are an accountable publisher rather than an anonymous site.
Keep the site technically clean
Fast loading, works on phones, sensible URLs, and pages that are not buried behind pop-ups. Article structured data helps Google understand what it is looking at.
Publish consistently
A site that posts several times a week builds a track record. One post a month does not look like a news operation.
Setting Up Publisher Center
Still worth doing, and it takes a few minutes:
- Go to Google Publisher Center and sign in.
- Add your publication with its name and website address.
- Verify that you own the site, which uses the same verification as Search Console.
- Upload your logo at the sizes it asks for.
- Set your publication’s location and language.
- Publish your changes.
What About a News Sitemap?
A Google News sitemap only includes articles from the last couple of days and helps Google find fresh content quickly. It is genuinely useful if you publish often.
It is not required though. Most SEO plugins can generate one, and if you publish a few times a week your normal sitemap plus fast indexing will usually do the job.
Common Questions
How long until I appear in Google News?
There is no set timeline because there is no approval step. Sites that consistently publish genuine news with clear authorship tend to start appearing over weeks to months. There is no button that speeds it up.
My site was in Google News before and disappeared. Why?
Usually either the content drifted away from news toward general blogging, publishing became irregular, or quality signals slipped. It is worth reviewing honestly against the points above.
Do I need Publisher Center to appear?
No. It controls how you are presented, not whether you are eligible.
Can any blog get into Google News?
Only if it genuinely publishes news. A blog covering tips and tutorials will not qualify no matter how well optimised it is, because it is not the kind of content Google News surfaces.
