How to Get a Wix Website Cited in ChatGPT and Perplexity
A practical guide to making a Wix site crawlable, understandable and worth citing—without pretending there is a secret “AI ranking” switch.
What “cited by AI” actually means
A citation is not the same as an ordinary blue-link ranking. An answer engine may search for several related questions, collect supporting pages, compare claims and then attach a small set of sources to its response. That means your page has to do two jobs: it must be discoverable, and it must contain a passage that is useful enough to support the answer.
There is no guaranteed submission form for a ChatGPT or Perplexity citation. OpenAI says inclusion is not guaranteed, but sites should allow OAI-SearchBot and make sure their host or CDN does not block its published IP ranges. Google similarly says its AI features rely on the same technical and people-first foundations as Search; no special “AI schema” or llms.txt file is required.
Step 1: Confirm the Wix page can be discovered
Start with boring checks because they cause expensive failures. Publish the page, use a permanent descriptive URL, confirm it is not marked noindex, and make sure it appears in the Wix sitemap. Then link to it from the main navigation, a relevant service hub or another page that search engines already crawl.
- Open the page in a private browser window.
- View the source and confirm the title, description, canonical and visible answer text are present.
- Check the page’s indexing setting in Wix SEO settings.
- Open the site’s sitemap and confirm the preferred URL appears once.
- Inspect the URL in Google Search Console and request indexing only after the page is final.
Do not block all AI-related user agents as one group. OpenAI distinguishes search discovery from model training. A publisher can allow OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT Search while making a separate decision about GPTBot. Review crawler rules deliberately instead of pasting an aggressive robots template from social media.
Step 2: Give one page one clear search job
A page about “everything we do” gives an answer engine very little confidence about when to cite it. Choose one main intent: explain a service, compare approaches, answer a buying question, document a process, or solve a specific problem. Put the direct answer near the beginning, then expand it with evidence and useful detail.
For example, a Wix agency page targeting “Wix SEO” is broad. A supporting page explaining “how Wix redirects behave during a redesign” can be far more citable because it answers a contained question. Build a connected topic cluster rather than publishing dozens of unrelated AI-written pages.
Step 3: Make the business and author easy to identify
Answer engines need to understand who is making a claim. The page should name the company, the author or reviewer, the relevant service, the audience and the location where location matters. Link the author to a substantial profile and keep the same identity information across the website and credible third-party profiles.
- Use a real author name and a useful author page.
- Explain relevant experience without inflated claims.
- Connect the page to the matching Wix service or topic hub.
- Keep business name, logo, address and profile links consistent.
- Use Organization, Person, Article and Breadcrumb structured data only where they match visible content.
Step 4: Create passages that deserve citation
Generic definitions are easy for a model to find anywhere. Your page becomes more useful when it contributes something specific: an original checklist, a tested workflow, screenshots, before-and-after evidence, a transparent comparison, a small dataset, or an expert explanation of a mistake people repeatedly make.
Write headings that reflect real questions. Under each heading, answer first and explain second. Use tables only when they help compare exact fields. Name limitations and uncertainty. If a claim changes over time, link to the primary source and show when the page was reviewed.
| Weak passage | Stronger passage |
|---|---|
| “Wix is great for SEO and AI.” | “Wix exposes page titles, descriptions, canonicals, indexing directives and structured data controls. Citation still depends on the quality and trustworthiness of the page.” |
| “Add schema to rank in ChatGPT.” | “Use schema to describe visible entities consistently. It can reduce ambiguity, but it does not guarantee selection or citation.” |
| “Publish lots of GEO content.” | “Publish the smallest set of pages needed to cover distinct user intents, and merge pages that compete for the same question.” |
Step 5: Use Wix SEO controls correctly
Wix can render the core signals needed for search: titles, descriptions, canonical links, indexing directives and structured data. Configure global SEO patterns for consistency, then override them on important service and research pages. The title should describe the page, not repeat a slogan. The canonical must point to the preferred live URL.
Add JSON-LD only when it reflects the page. An Article can identify the headline, author, publisher and dates. BreadcrumbList can describe hierarchy. Organization and Person entities should use stable IDs and consistent profile links. Do not invent ratings, FAQs, locations or credentials to make the markup look richer.
Step 6: Build evidence beyond your Wix website
Self-published claims are not enough for competitive subjects. Earn references from relevant associations, partners, reputable directories, interviews, podcasts, event pages, industry publications and genuine customer discussions. The goal is not to spray the brand name across low-quality sites; it is to make the entity verifiable from more than one trustworthy source.
When another site mentions the business, it should use the same name and point to the most relevant page. A small number of contextually strong mentions is more useful than hundreds of automated profile links.
Step 7: Test citations without fooling yourself
AI answers vary by wording, location, model, account and date. Test a repeatable set of prompts rather than asking one flattering question. Record whether the brand is mentioned, whether the exact page is cited, which competitors appear, and whether the answer correctly describes the service.
- Use neutral prompts that a real buyer might ask.
- Test the same prompts on ChatGPT and Perplexity at regular intervals.
- Save the answer, sources and test date.
- Separate a brand mention from a clickable citation.
- Check referral traffic and conversions, not visibility alone.
A 30-day Wix citation plan
- Week 1: Audit crawling, canonicals, sitemap inclusion, important internal links and AI searchbot access.
- Week 2: Rewrite one commercial page and two supporting answers around distinct user intents.
- Week 3: Add verified author, business and evidence signals; validate matching structured data.
- Week 4: Earn relevant third-party mentions, run a fixed prompt test and record the baseline.
Do not publish twenty near-duplicate city or question pages in the first month. Prove that one small topic cluster is technically clean, useful and differentiated before scaling it.
Common reasons a Wix page is not cited
- The page is new, isolated or missing from internal navigation.
- The robots rules, CDN or security layer blocks the relevant crawler.
- The copy repeats common advice without original value.
- The entity is inconsistent across the website and external profiles.
- Claims have no evidence, dates or identifiable author.
- Several pages compete to answer the same question.
- The answer is hidden in an image, animation or interaction instead of accessible text.
- The page is technically eligible, but another source is simply more useful or trusted.

Frequently asked questions
Can a Wix website appear in ChatGPT Search?
Yes. OpenAI says public sites can be eligible when OAI-SearchBot can access them. Eligibility does not guarantee a citation.
Does Wix block Perplexity?
Wix itself is not a general barrier. Check the site’s current robots rules, security settings and the specific crawler documentation because configurations can differ.
Do I need llms.txt?
No. Google explicitly says special AI text files are not required for its AI search features. Focus first on crawlability, useful text, internal links and evidence.
Does schema guarantee an AI citation?
No. Accurate structured data can clarify entities and page meaning, but selection depends on relevance, quality, trust and the answer system’s process.
How long does it take?
There is no fixed timeline. Crawling and indexing can happen before citations appear, and a technically perfect page may still not be selected. Measure progress through indexation, mentions, citations, referral visits and qualified enquiries.
