Most freelancers in Pakistan choose their bank the way they choose a mobile network, whichever one had a branch nearby when they needed an account. Then they spend years losing a slice of every payment to a decision they made in ten minutes.
The difference between a well-chosen and badly-chosen setup is not dramatic on a single payment. Over a year of receiving international income it is easily a month’s earnings.
This is how I would choose, and what to check before you open anything.
Before the Bank: What Actually Costs You Money
People compare banks on the wrong things. The account maintenance fee is almost irrelevant. Four other things determine what you keep.
What to compare | Why it matters more than you think |
|---|---|
The exchange rate applied | The largest hidden cost by far. A bank quoting a rate a few rupees below the interbank rate is taking a percentage of every payment silently. |
Receiving fees on inward remittance | Some are flat, some are percentage-based. On larger payments the difference compounds fast. |
Speed of credit | Same day versus five working days changes your cash flow, not your income, but it matters when you are paying bills. |
Documentation friction | How much paperwork per payment, and whether the branch staff understand freelance income at all. |
That last row is genuinely underrated. A bank with excellent rates and a branch that treats every inward payment as suspicious will cost you hours repeatedly. Ask other freelancers about their actual experience with a specific branch, not just the institution.
The Structural Decision: How Money Reaches You
Your bank matters less than the route your money takes to get there. Three common routes, and they behave differently.
Direct bank transfer from the client. Cleanest documentation, usually best for large recurring payments, slowest and most paperwork-heavy. Good for retainer clients paying monthly.
Through a payment platform. Payoneer and similar services sit between your client and your bank. Faster and far less friction, at the cost of the platform’s own fees and exchange margin. This is what most Fiverr and Upwork freelancers use, and I have written separately about withdrawing from Payoneer to a Pakistani bank account.
Through a mobile wallet link. Convenient for smaller amounts, generally the worst rates. Fine for topping up, poor as your primary route.
Most established freelancers end up using two routes: a platform for marketplace income, and direct transfer for large direct clients. That is a reasonable setup rather than a compromise.
The Account Type Worth Asking About
This is the part most freelancers do not know exists, and it is the highest-value thing in this article.
Pakistan has specific account categories intended for people earning foreign exchange: including arrangements aimed at IT exporters and freelancers, which can allow you to retain a portion of your earnings in foreign currency rather than converting everything to rupees immediately.
Why that matters: if you convert every payment on arrival, you are exposed to the rupee’s movement on every single transaction. Retaining some balance in foreign currency gives you control over when you convert, and lets you pay foreign expenses (hosting, software, ad spend) without converting twice.
The exact schemes, eligibility rules and retention limits change with State Bank policy, so I am deliberately not quoting figures that will be out of date. What I would do is walk into a decent branch of a major bank and ask specifically about accounts for freelancers and IT exporters. Ask by name. Counter staff will often default to a standard savings account unless you prompt them.
Registering as an IT exporter, where you qualify, also tends to smooth the documentation side considerably and can affect your tax position. That is worth a conversation with an accountant rather than a blog post, including this one.
Which Banks Freelancers Actually Use
I am not going to rank these, because the right answer depends on your city, your branch, and how much you receive.
The institutions Pakistani freelancers most commonly report using for international income include Habib Bank (HBL), United Bank (UBL), Meezan Bank, Bank Alfalah, Faysal Bank and Standard Chartered. Several of these have specific products aimed at freelancers and IT exporters.
Broadly, and with the caveat that this varies by branch:
- The large established banks tend to have the most reliable international remittance handling and the most branches that understand freelance income
- Banks with a stronger digital offering tend to be faster and less paperwork-heavy, which matters if you receive frequent smaller payments
- Islamic banking options are available across most of these if that matters to you, and do not disadvantage you on international receipts
What I would not do is choose based on a comparison table on any website, including this one. Rates, fees and product names change several times a year. Shortlist two or three, then call or visit and ask the four questions from the table above directly.
Practical Setup Advice
- Keep business and personal separate. A dedicated account for freelance income makes tax filing dramatically simpler and makes your income legible if you ever need to prove it for a visa or loan.
- Get your IBAN correct and saved. Most failed or delayed international transfers trace back to a mistyped IBAN or a missing SWIFT code. If you are unsure how yours is structured, I have covered IBAN numbers for Pakistani bank accounts separately.
- Keep records of every payment. Invoice, contract, and the credit advice from the bank. This is what makes tax filing survivable and what banks ask for when a payment is queried.
- Do not convert everything immediately by default. Convert what you need. Hold what you can, if your account type permits it.
- Declare your income. Freelance earnings from abroad are taxable income, and the filing position for IT and IT-enabled exports has generally been favourable. Being unregistered is a worse financial position than being registered, not a better one.
The Short Version
There is no single best bank in Pakistan for freelancers, and any article confidently naming one is guessing on your behalf.
There is a best setup: a dedicated account at a major bank whose branch understands foreign income, an account type appropriate to earning foreign exchange, a payment platform for marketplace work, clean records, and a habit of not converting on autopilot.
Get that right once and it quietly pays you for years.
