Google Business Profile, Set Up So It Actually Ranks
For anyone people phone or visit, the map listings take most of the contact. Most profiles are half filled in and never touched again.
Why the map pack beats your website
Three listings take most of the contact for local searches. Your site is competing for what is left.
-
Someone searches nearby
They are on a phone, close by, and ready to call. Three listings appear before anything else.
-
Your profile is half built
Wrong category, no service areas, three old photos, reviews nobody answered.
-
The settings get corrected
Category, services, areas and photos fixed, with website pages that back up the areas you claim.
For any business people phone or visit, the three map listings take most of the contact.
Not the website. The listing. And most profiles are set up once, half filled in, and never touched again.
It is free, it is the fastest thing to improve in local search, and it is the thing most often left broken.
The Honest Version: Distance Beats Everything
You cannot rank everywhere
How close you are to the searcher is a major factor and you cannot change it. A business in one part of a city will not dominate the map results across the whole city, no matter what anyone sells you.
Anyone promising map rankings across a whole city is either lying or planning something against the rules.
What you can actually change
Your category, which is the single highest-impact setting and the one I most often find wrong. Your completeness. Your reviews. And how well your website supports the areas you serve.
The honest ceiling
You can realistically own your radius. Beyond that you need either more locations or a different strategy, and I will tell you which rather than take money to chase something that cannot happen.
What I Fix
Mostly settings people did not know existed.
The primary category
The biggest single lever, and wrong on a large share of profiles I look at. Changing it can move rankings within days.
Service areas
Defined properly rather than left blank or set to an entire country.
Services and attributes
The fields that let you appear for specific searches rather than only your category name.
Photos
Real ones, of the actual business, added regularly. Profiles with active photos outperform dormant ones.
Reviews and replies
Getting them consistently, and answering them. Unanswered reviews are a visible signal of neglect.
Consistency with your site
Your name, address and phone matching everywhere, and pages that back up the areas you claim.
What This Includes
1. A full audit of the profile
Every field, including the ones nobody fills in. Most profiles are missing more than half of what is available.
2. Category and service correction
Chosen from what people actually search for your kind of business, not from what sounds most impressive.
3. Website support
Your profile and your site should agree. Where they do not, the profile struggles. This is the part pure listing services skip.
4. A review approach you will actually use
Not software. A simple habit that fits how you already work, because complicated review systems get abandoned in a month.
When This Is Not Your Problem
You are not a local business. If customers never visit and location is irrelevant, this does very little for you.
Your profile is already complete and active. If categories are right, photos are recent and reviews are answered, you are ahead of most. The next gain is on your website.
You are suspended. That is a different job with a different process, and it comes first.
What You Can Check Yourself First
Four checks, all free, and the first one finds the most common problem.
1. Look at your primary category
Open your profile and read the primary category. Then search for what your best customers actually type and look at the businesses in the map results. If their category is different from yours, that difference is probably costing you more than anything else.
Primary category is the single highest-impact field and it is wrong on a large share of profiles.
2. Count your filled fields
Services, attributes, opening hours, description, products. Most profiles have fewer than half of these completed. Each empty one is a search you cannot appear for.
3. Check your photos and their dates
Profiles with recent, genuine photos consistently outperform dormant ones. If your most recent photo is from three years ago, that is a signal.
4. Read your unanswered reviews
Every review without a reply is visible to every future customer. Replying is free, takes minutes, and is one of the few local ranking factors entirely within your control.
What Actually Decides Map Rankings
Google weighs three things, and only two of them are yours to change.
Distance, which you cannot change
How close you are to the person searching. This is why no business dominates map results across an entire city from one address, and why anyone promising that is selling something impossible.
Prominence, which you build slowly
How well known the business is: reviews, mentions elsewhere on the web, and how established your website is. This is the slowest to move and the most durable once it does.
Relevance, which you control today
How well your profile matches what was searched. Category, services, attributes and description. This is where nearly all the fast improvement lives, because most profiles have barely filled it in.
Which is why category and completeness come first in every profile I work on. It is the only part that moves in days rather than months.

Common Questions
Should I use my keywords in the business name?
No. It is against Google’s rules, it is one of the most common reasons profiles get suspended, and competitors report it constantly. Use your real trading name.
How many categories should I add?
One primary, chosen carefully, and only secondary categories that genuinely apply. Adding unrelated ones dilutes relevance rather than widening it.
Does posting updates help rankings?
Barely, on the evidence available. They can help conversion by showing the business is active. I would rather you spent that time collecting reviews.
How fast do map rankings move?
Category and completeness changes can show within days to a few weeks. It is the fastest-moving thing in local search.
Can I rank across the whole city?
Realistically no, from one location. Proximity is a factor you cannot change. You can own your area convincingly.
Do I need posts and updates?
They help a little and cost you time. I would rather you spent that time collecting reviews.
How many reviews do I need?
More than the businesses ranking above you, gathered steadily rather than in bursts. Sudden batches look artificial.
Will you write fake reviews?
No. It is against the rules, it gets profiles suspended, and it is not a service I offer at any price.
