ChatGPT Names Your Competitors, Not You

Ask ChatGPT to recommend somebody in your industry. Your competitors get named and you do not, even though you rank fine in Google.

These systems quote, they do not browse

Language models mostly repeat what other sources already say about you. If nothing states plainly what you do, there is nothing to repeat.

  1. You rank fine in Google

Good site, good content, decent positions. Everything looks healthy on the reports you already get.

  2. ?

    The AI answers skip you

Vague descriptions on your own site, contradictions across profiles, sometimes a robots.txt rule blocking the crawlers entirely.

  3. The obstacles get removed

One plain statement of what you do, consistent everywhere, correct schema, crawler access, then a retest against the baseline.

Not sure which stage your site is stuck at? A 20 minute review will tell you, at no cost and with no obligation.
Test my AI visibility

Ask ChatGPT to recommend somebody in your industry. Your competitors get named.

You do not.

You rank fine in Google. Your site is fast, your content is good, and the machines that increasingly answer questions on your behalf act as though you do not exist.

This page is about finding out why, and fixing the specific reasons. It is a one-off diagnostic and fix, not an ongoing programme.

The Honest Version: Nobody Can Guarantee an AI Mention

There is no ranking to buy

You cannot submit to an AI model. There is no console, no index status, no position to report. Anybody selling guaranteed ChatGPT rankings is selling something that does not exist.

What you can actually influence

Whether the sources these systems read describe you clearly and consistently. That is genuinely fixable, and it is most of the gap for most businesses.

And what the results look like

Measurable but noisy. The same question asked twice can give different answers. I test repeatedly and report honestly, including when nothing changed.

If you want certainty, this is not the service to buy. If you want the obstacles removed, that part is real work with real outcomes.

Why These Systems Skip You

The reasons are more mundane than people expect, and that is good news.

They quote, they do not browse

Language models mostly repeat what other sources already say about you. If nothing on the open web states plainly what you do and who you serve, there is nothing to repeat, so you get left out of the sentence.

Your own site describes you vaguely

Marketing language is the enemy here. Pages saying you deliver innovative solutions give a machine nothing usable. Pages saying you fix indexing problems for ecommerce sites in the UK give it a sentence it can reuse.

And your information contradicts itself

Different descriptions in different places, an outdated profile somewhere, a bio that says something else. Contradiction makes a system hedge, and hedging means naming somebody clearer instead.

What Actually Gets You Mentioned

None of this is exotic. Most of it is clarity.

A plain statement of what you do

One unambiguous sentence, repeated consistently, that a machine can lift without interpreting.

Being described by other sources

Directories, profiles, mentions, interviews. Systems trust what others say about you more than what you say about yourself.

Content that answers real questions directly

Question, then answer, in plain language. The same structure that wins snippets works here for the same reason.

Structured data that agrees with the page

Schema stating who you are, what you offer and where. Machine-readable and consistent with the visible content.

Being crawlable by AI systems specifically

Some sites block these crawlers in robots.txt without realising. That is a two-minute fix with an immediate effect.

Genuine expertise signals

Author identity, credentials, real experience. Thin anonymous content is skipped by these systems more aggressively than by Google.

What You Can Check Yourself First

1. Ask the question your customer would ask

Not your business name. Ask for a recommendation the way a stranger would, in ChatGPT and in Google AI Overviews. Note who gets named.

2. Ask directly about your company

Ask what your business does. If the answer is wrong, vague or confused with somebody else, you have found the problem and it is usually fixable.

3. Check your robots.txt

Look for rules blocking AI crawlers. Some sites block them by accident through a security plugin or a copied config, then wonder why they are invisible.

4. Read your own homepage as a machine would

Is there one sentence stating plainly what you do and who for? If you have to infer it from three paragraphs of positioning, so does everything else.

What I Do

1. Test properly and record it

A defined set of questions across the major systems, run repeatedly because answers vary. You get a baseline you can actually compare against later.

2. Find the specific reasons

Blocked crawlers, vague descriptions, contradictory information, missing structured data, absent third-party mentions. Usually two or three of these, not all of them.

3. Fix what is fixable

Clear statements, consistent descriptions, correct schema, crawler access. The parts within your control get done properly.

4. Retest and report honestly

Including when the answer did not change. Given how new this is, an honest report of no movement is worth more than an optimistic one.

Where This Sits Next to My Other Work

Worth being clear, because the terms overlap and the market is full of noise.

This page is a one-off fix. Diagnose why you are missing, remove the obstacles, retest, report. It ends.

My generative engine optimisation service is ongoing. Continuous content built to be cited, monitored over months. That is a programme, not a repair.

Start here. If the fix reveals that your real problem is that nothing on the web says anything about you, the ongoing work is the honest recommendation, and I will tell you so.

Common Questions

Can you guarantee ChatGPT will mention me?

No, and nobody can. What I can do is remove the reasons you are being skipped, which for most businesses is the whole gap.

How is this different from normal SEO?

It overlaps heavily. Clarity, structure and reputation matter in both. The difference is that these systems reward plain description far more than keyword targeting.

Do I need this if I rank well in Google?

Increasingly yes. A growing share of questions get answered without anybody visiting a result, including yours.

Should I block AI crawlers instead?

Some publishers do, to protect content. If you want to be recommended, blocking them guarantees you are not.

How do you measure it?

Defined questions, run repeatedly, recorded. It is noisier than rank tracking and I present it as such.

Does schema markup help?

It helps these systems state facts about you confidently. It is a supporting signal rather than the main one.

How long before anything changes?

Crawler access can show effects in weeks. Reputation-based changes take months, because they depend on other sites.

Is this worth doing now or too early?

If your buyers are asking AI for recommendations, it is not early. If they are not yet, the clarity work still improves normal search.

Ask an AI what your business does

Send me the answer it gives. I will tell you free whether the problem is access, clarity or reputation, because the fix is different for each.
