Backlinks get most of the attention in SEO conversations, mostly because they feel hard-won and out of your hands. Internal linking gets almost none of that attention, which is strange, because it is one of the only levers in SEO you control completely. You do not need to pitch anyone, wait for a reply, or pay for a placement. You just open the CMS and add a link. Yet on most technical audits, internal linking is a mess: pages buried three menus deep that nothing else points to, blog posts that link to the homepage a dozen times and a genuinely relevant related article zero times, anchor text that says “click here” or “read more” instead of anything descriptive. Internal linking gets neglected precisely because it feels too easy to matter. That assumption is wrong, and it is worth unpacking why.
How Internal Links Pass Authority and Relevance Signals
Google’s original PageRank patent modeled the web as a graph in which links act like votes, and a page’s importance is a function of how many other important pages point to it. Decades of algorithm changes later, the exact mechanics are proprietary and almost certainly far more nuanced than the 1998 formula, but the conceptual model still holds for internal links: when a strong page on your site links to a weaker one, some portion of that page’s accumulated authority is understood to flow through the link. Practitioners call this “link equity,” and while nobody outside Google can quantify it precisely, the directional effect is well documented across countless before-and-after case studies.
What matters practically is the pattern this creates. A page that receives internal links from many relevant, well-trafficked pages tends to be treated as more important than an identical page sitting at the end of a link chain nobody follows. Anchor text also carries relevance signals: it tells search engines (and readers) what the destination page is about, in the destination’s own words rather than the linking page’s. A page linked with the anchor “enterprise password management” is getting a clearer relevance signal than one linked with “this tool.” None of this means you should build link farms of internal pages pointing at each other for the sake of it. Links should exist because they genuinely help a reader go deeper on a topic; the SEO benefit is a byproduct of doing that well, not a substitute for it.
Crawlability and Discovery: Helping Google Find (and Re-Find) Your Pages
Googlebot discovers new URLs primarily by following links, whether from external sites, your XML sitemap, or your own internal linking. Sitemaps tell Google a URL exists; they do very little to convince Google the URL is worth crawling often or indexing at all. Internal links do both. A page that is linked from your homepage, your main navigation, or a frequently-crawled hub page gets recrawled far more often than a page whose only path in is a sitemap entry.
This matters most for deep pages: individual product variants, older blog posts, location pages in a multi-location business, or documentation pages several folders deep. If you publish a new article and its only internal link comes from a paginated archive page 40 posts back, do not be surprised if it takes weeks to get crawled and indexed, and longer still to get recrawled after you update it. The fix is almost always to add a link from something Google already visits often, whether that is a related-posts block, a hub page, or a mention in a newer, well-linked article. Crawl budget is a real constraint for large sites (typically tens of thousands of URLs and up), and every internal link you place is effectively a vote for “prioritize this over other things you could be crawling.”
Site Architecture and Link Depth
Link depth is the number of clicks it takes to reach a page starting from the homepage, following only internal links. Pages that are three clicks deep or fewer generally get crawled and ranked more reliably than pages buried five, six, or ten clicks down, even when the content itself is strong. This is why a flat, pyramid-shaped architecture (homepage, then category or pillar pages, then individual articles or products) tends to outperform a deeply nested folder structure, even if the nested structure feels more “organized” to whoever built the CMS taxonomy.
A practical target for most content or ecommerce sites is to keep every page you actually want to rank within three clicks of the homepage. That does not mean flattening your URL structure or abandoning subcategories; it means making sure every important page is reachable via a real, crawlable link path that short, even if the URL itself is nested several folders deep. Pagination is a common culprit here: if your only path to older content is “page 2, page 3, page 4…” of a blog index, everything past the first page or two effectively becomes several clicks deep, invisible to a large chunk of your own linking structure. Category pages, tag pages, and “related content” modules exist partly to solve this by creating shortcuts that don’t require walking through chronological pagination.
Anchor Text Best Practices
Anchor text is where relevance meets user experience. The job of anchor text is to set an accurate expectation for what a reader gets after clicking, while giving search engines a natural-language description of the destination. Three practical rules hold up well:
- Write descriptive anchors tied to the destination’s actual topic (“internal link audit checklist”) rather than vague phrases (“click here,” “this page,” “learn more”).
- Vary your anchor text across the multiple internal links pointing at the same page. If every single link to your pricing page uses the exact phrase “best CRM software,” that pattern looks manufactured rather than natural, the same red flag Google watches for in external link profiles.
- Keep anchors reasonably short and specific rather than stuffing an entire sentence or a full keyword list into one link.
Over-optimized exact-match anchor text, repeated identically across dozens of links, is one of the more common self-inflicted issues in internal linking. It rarely triggers a manual action the way spammy external link schemes do, but it wastes an opportunity: varied, natural anchor text lets you reinforce several related keyword phrases for the same destination page instead of just one.
Not all internal links carry equal weight. A link placed in the body of an article, surrounded by relevant text, sits in a context search engines can parse for topical meaning. A link sitting in a global footer or sidebar that appears identically on every page of the site carries much weaker contextual signal, because it says nothing specific about the page it’s on. Google has described boilerplate, site-wide navigation links as being treated differently from links editorially placed within unique page content.
This doesn’t mean navigation and footer links are useless; they are often essential for crawlability and basic usability, and a well-organized main navigation genuinely helps users and bots understand your site’s top-level structure. But they should not be your only internal linking strategy. If a page’s sole internal link comes from being one of forty items in a footer sitemap, treat that as close to an orphan page in practice. The higher-value work is going back into existing content and adding two or three genuinely useful contextual links per 1,000 words to pages that deserve the mention, rather than relying on templated navigation to do all the linking for you.
Hub-and-Spoke and Pillar-Cluster Internal Linking
The hub-and-spoke (or pillar-cluster) model organizes content around a broad pillar page that covers a topic at a high level, with narrower “spoke” articles that each go deep on one subtopic. Every spoke links back to the pillar, the pillar links out to every spoke, and spokes link sideways to each other where genuinely relevant. Done on a topic like “technical SEO,” the pillar might be a comprehensive overview page, with spokes covering crawl budget, XML sitemaps, canonical tags, JavaScript rendering, and, yes, internal linking itself.
This structure does two things at once. It concentrates internal links onto the pillar page, helping it accumulate the authority needed to rank for the competitive head-term query, while the spokes pick up long-tail traffic and pass some of that back up through the cluster. It also gives search engines a clean signal of topical depth: a site with fifteen well-linked articles under a single pillar reads as more authoritative on that subject than the same fifteen articles scattered with no connective structure. When planning new content, it’s worth asking which existing pillar a new article should slot under, and updating that pillar’s own content to link to the new piece the same day it publishes, rather than leaving that step for “later.”
Orphan Page Detection and Fixes
An orphan page is a URL that exists, is often indexed, and may even be listed in your XML sitemap, but has no internal links pointing to it from anywhere else on the site. These accumulate quietly: old landing pages built for a campaign that ended, blog posts that lost their homepage feature slot after a redesign, product pages whose category got restructured. Orphan pages get essentially no internal link equity and rely entirely on external links or sheer luck to get crawled at all.
Finding them requires comparing two data sets: everything a crawler can reach by following links, and everything that actually exists (from your CMS export, XML sitemap, or Google Search Console’s indexed-pages list). A URL that shows up in the second set but not the first is an orphan. Once found, the fix is usually simple: add a contextual link from a relevant, currently-linked page, fold the orphan into a hub-and-spoke cluster where it belongs, or, if the page genuinely isn’t worth keeping, redirect or remove it rather than leaving it to rot unlinked.
Auditing Internal Links: Tools and Techniques
Screaming Frog SEO Spider remains the standard tool for internal link graph analysis. Its built-in “Orphan Pages” report (found under Reports) can cross-reference a full site crawl against connected data sources such as Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and your XML sitemaps, surfacing URLs that are indexed or getting traffic but missing from the crawl’s link graph. The tool’s “Inlinks” and “Outlinks” tabs, plus its site visualization (crawl tree and directory tree diagrams), make it straightforward to spot pages with very few inbound internal links, unusually high link depth, or link equity concentrated in the wrong places.
Search Console’s own Links report, under the Internal Links tab, shows exactly how many internal links each URL currently receives, sorted from most-linked to least-linked. It’s a quick way to spot pages you consider important that Search Console shows receiving only one or two internal links; that mismatch is usually worth fixing immediately. Beyond these two, a simple site: search combined with a crawl comparison, or database queries against the CMS for pages with zero inbound references, can catch what an automated crawl misses, particularly on sites with client-side rendered navigation that a basic crawl doesn’t execute.
Strategic Linking: Boosting Priority Pages from High-Authority Pages
Not every page on a site has equal authority, and that inequality is useful. Identify your highest-authority pages, usually the homepage, your most-backlinked articles, or whatever content historically attracts the most external links and traffic, and treat them as a resource to be spent deliberately. If a commercially important page is underperforming despite solid on-page optimization, one of the highest-leverage fixes available is adding a contextual link to it from a page that already has strong authority and consistent crawl activity.
This is a common tactic for pushing a page past a stubborn ranking plateau: find the two or three most authoritative, most-linked pages on the site that are topically adjacent, and add a natural, contextual link from each to the target page. It also works as routine maintenance. Whenever a new cornerstone article launches, it should get a link from at least one existing high-traffic page within the first week, rather than depending on organic discovery through the site’s normal linking pattern to eventually catch up.
Breadcrumbs and Their SEO Value
Breadcrumb trails (Home > Category > Subcategory > Page) serve internal linking in a quiet but consistent way. Every breadcrumb is itself an internal link, and because breadcrumbs appear on every page in a section, they create a dense, logically-structured mesh of links back up the hierarchy, reinforcing category and pillar pages without any extra editorial effort. They also help search engines understand a page’s position in your site’s hierarchy, and with proper BreadcrumbList structured data, they can appear directly in search result snippets, replacing a raw URL with a readable path that improves click-through rate.
Breadcrumbs are not a substitute for contextual in-content links since they only reflect hierarchy, not topical relationships across categories, but they are close to a free win: low implementation cost, genuine usability benefit, and a steady contribution to keeping category and hub pages well-linked across the entire site.
A Practical Internal Linking Audit Workflow
A workable, repeatable process looks roughly like this for most sites, run quarterly with a lighter monthly check for newly published content:
- Crawl the full site with Screaming Frog (or an equivalent crawler), connecting Search Console and Analytics data sources.
- Pull the Orphan Pages report and cross-check against your XML sitemap and CMS export to catch anything the crawl alone might miss.
- Review the Inlinks count per URL, sorted ascending, and flag any commercially or strategically important page with very few internal links.
- Check link depth (clicks from homepage) for priority pages; anything beyond three clicks gets a plan to shorten the path.
- Scan anchor text distribution for your top pages, looking for over-repeated exact-match phrases across many links.
- For each newly published article, immediately add it into the relevant pillar-cluster structure and link to it from at least one high-authority existing page.
- Fix, redirect, or intentionally retire any confirmed orphan pages rather than leaving them unlinked indefinitely.
Internal Linking Checklist
- Every important page is reachable within three clicks of the homepage.
- No confirmed orphan pages remain unlinked, redirected, or removed.
- Anchor text is descriptive and varied, not repeated exact-match phrases.
